For webshop owners: Introducing the 3LA ChatGPT Shopping Readiness Audit

Discover what we learned building and testing the first ChatGPT Shopping audit tool. Real insights from Norwegian e-commerce sites, critical bugs fixed, and how to optimize your store for 800M+ weekly users.

Introducing ChatGPT Shopping Readiness Audit: What We’ve Learned From Beta Testing

TL;DR: We’ve built the first ChatGPT Shopping audit tool for e-commerce sites. After testing with major Norwegian retailers, we discovered critical issues that could prevent your products from being recommended to 800M+ weekly ChatGPT users. Here’s what we learned.

What is ChatGPT Shopping?

If you haven’t been paying attention, you’re missing a massive shift in how people shop online.

ChatGPT now serves over 800 million weekly users who ask questions like:

  • “Find me the best laptop under $1000”
  • “I need a gift for my dad who loves fishing”
  • “Compare these three strollers for me”

When users ask these questions, ChatGPT actively crawls the web to find and recommend products. If your store isn’t optimized, your competitors will be recommended instead.

This isn’t theory. This is happening right now.

The Problem: Most E-commerce Sites Are Invisible to ChatGPT

We built the ChatGPT Shopping Readiness audit into our Three-Layer Approach platform to answer one critical question:

“Will ChatGPT recommend MY products?”

During beta testing with Norwegian e-commerce sites, we discovered something alarming: even major retailers and known influencers niche shops score poorly.

Will ChatGPT Recommend Your Products?

We ran a ChatGPT Shopping audit on Blond Absolu Cicaplasme Leave-In from Jan Thomas Studio — and the results illustrate a pattern we see repeatedly across Norwegian e-commerce.

Total score: 41/100

This store is not ready for ChatGPT Shopping.

What’s Working

robots.txt — 100/100

GPTBot is explicitly allowed. ChatGPT can crawl the site. That’s the starting point — not the finish line.

Product Schema — 85/100

The foundation is solid. 7 of 10 fields are implemented. But three fields that ChatGPT actively uses when ranking and recommending products are missing:

Field Status Consequence
sku Missing Product cannot be disambiguated from similar items
aggregateRating Missing No average rating = no social proof for the AI
review Missing ChatGPT cannot cite customer experiences

What’s Blocking Visibility

Stock Availability — 0/100

Inventory status is not visible without user interaction. ChatGPT cannot read JavaScript-rendered content the way a browser does. If “In stock” only appears after a click or an API call, that information simply does not exist for the AI agent.

Fix: Stock status must be rendered directly in HTML — not injected via JavaScript after page load.

Shipping Information — 0/100

No shipping information found on the product page. For ChatGPT Shopping, this is critical: purchase decisions are based on total cost. An AI agent that cannot calculate delivery cost will deprioritise — or exclude — the product entirely.

Fix: Display shipping cost and delivery time above the fold, ideally backed by shippingDetails in schema.

Product Images — 49/100

29 images analysed. 1 is missing descriptive alt text. A low absolute number, but alt text is one of the few signals AI agents use to understand what an image depicts — not merely that it exists.

Fix: Add descriptive alt text to all product images.

The Bottom Line

Jan Thomas Studio has done a lot right technically. But the three zeros — stock availability, shipping, and reviews in schema — are precisely the data points an AI agent needs to make a purchase recommendation on behalf of a user. This is a Shopify store, so I recommend all of you using Shopify to sell your stuff to check if you are ready.

41/100 means: ChatGPT can find the product. It won’t recommend it.

The 7 Metrics That Matter for ChatGPT Shopping

Our audit checks these critical factors:

1. 🤖 ChatGPT Bot Access (Pass/Fail)

What we check: Is GPTBot allowed in your robots.txt?

Why it matters: If you’re blocking GPTBot, ChatGPT cannot crawl your products. Period.

Common mistake: Many sites block all bots with User-agent: * / Disallow: /

The fix:

User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /

Beta learner: 40% of tested sites accidentally blocked GPTBot.

2. 📦 Product Schema Completeness (0-100)

What we check: Do you have proper Product schema markup?

Why it matters: Without schema, ChatGPT can’t understand:

  • What you’re selling
  • How much it costs
  • If it’s in stock
  • Your brand

Critical fields:

  • ✅ name, image, description
  • ✅ offers.price, offers.priceCurrency, offers.availability
  • ⭐ brand, sku, aggregateRating, review

Beta learner: Even when schema exists, it’s often incomplete. Missing offers.availability is the #1 issue.

3. 📸 Product Images (0-100)

What we check:

  • Descriptive alt text
  • Modern formats (WebP/AVIF)
  • Multiple angles (3+ images)
  • Optimized file sizes

Why it matters: ChatGPT uses image alt text to understand your products. “IMG_1234.jpg” tells ChatGPT nothing.

Beta learner: 60% of products have generic alt text like “product image” instead of “OnePlus 15 smartphone front view in sand storm color”.

4. 📊 Inventory Visibility (Pass/Fail)

What we check: Is stock status visible without interaction?

Why it matters: ChatGPT can’t click dropdown menus or select variants. If “In Stock” isn’t visible in the first viewport, ChatGPT thinks availability is unknown.

Common mistake: Stock status only shown after selecting size/color.

Beta learner: 50% of fashion sites hide inventory until user selects variant.

5. 🚚 Shipping Information (Pass/Fail)

What we check: Are shipping costs and timeframes clearly visible?

Why it matters: When someone asks ChatGPT “find me a laptop with free shipping,” your site needs to show this upfront.

Common mistake: Shipping info only at checkout.

Beta learner: Sites with shipping badges on product pages score 30% higher overall.

6. ⭐ Review Schema (Pass/Fail)

What we check: Do you have AggregateRating or Review schema?

Why it matters: “Find me the best-rated phone under $1000” - ChatGPT needs structured review data.

Beta learner: Only 15% of tested sites had proper review schema, even when reviews existed on the page.

7. 💰 Price Accuracy (Pass/Fail)

What we check: Does your schema price match what’s displayed?

Why it matters: Price mismatches confuse ChatGPT and erode trust.

Beta learner: Norwegian sites commonly fail this due to space-separated thousands (12 990 kr). We’ve now built proper Nordic price format support.

Real-World Insights from Beta Testing

Finding #1: “We Have Schema” ≠ “ChatGPT Can Read It”

The Problem: Sites use schema validators and get green checkmarks. But during crawling:

  • Scripts get removed by overzealous security
  • Dynamic content isn’t loaded
  • Schema is incomplete

The Solution: Test with a tool that actually crawls your site like ChatGPT does.

Finding #2: Norwegian/Nordic Sites Need Special Handling

The Problem:

  • Price formats: “12 990 kr” vs “12990”
  • Language detection: “På lager” vs “In Stock”
  • Multiple currencies: NOK, SEK, DKK

The Solution: We built Nordic-specific validators that understand:

  • Space as thousand separator
  • Norwegian product availability terms
  • Regional pricing formats

Finding #3: Mobile-First ≠ AI-First

The Problem: Sites optimized for mobile often:

  • Hide content in accordions
  • Load prices after interaction
  • Use image carousels requiring swipes

The Reality: ChatGPT can’t click, swipe, or expand. It sees your first-view content only.

The Solution: Make critical info (price, availability, shipping) visible without interaction.
