The Story of the Glass Jar.

To understand why I've spent the last year building The Three-Layer Approach we need to go back 27 years - to 1999. Half a lifetime (mine). To a time before social media, before algorithms dictated our lives, and before artificial intelligence was anything more than science fiction.

The Story of the Glass Jar

To understand why I have spent the last year building the Three-Layer Approach, we need to go back to 1999 - before social media, before algorithms shaped what we saw, and before artificial intelligence was anything more than science fiction.

A question from 1999

I was a student in Copenhagen, training to become a New Media Manager, when I asked a question that took a quarter of a century to answer properly:

What happens to human creativity and communication if you remove all uncontrolled noise and replace it with filtered, intentional signals?

The concept: Organic Art

With my fellow students, I sketched out a first-semester project called Organic Art. The idea was brutal in its simplicity.

An artist would be sealed inside a glass bell jar for one week. No newspapers. No radio. No conversations on the street. No noise.

The only thing that could reach the artist was text - written signals from outside, sent by people who knew their words were the only thing getting through the glass. The artist created from those selected signals alone, then passed the relay baton to the next person in the jar.

It was a relay structure for human thought.

From glass jar to digital architecture

Why does a 1999 art-school project matter to your website in 2026?

Because we now live in the exact opposite of the glass jar. We drown in unfiltered input, algorithmic churn, and digital noise - and so do the machines reading our content.

The Three-Layer Approach is the digital version of that jar. When I wrote that I had "fallen into the 3LA pot" on my Norwegian SEOkontroll.no blog, I meant that I had spent a year working out how to put a business inside it: filter out the noise, and build up three layers of intentional signal.

Three layers, one coherent signal

Layer Audience What we remove What gets through the glass
Layer 1 - Human Readers and buyers Friction, hedging, walls of text A message that lands without interference
Layer 2 - Search Google, Bing Broken structure, wrong canonicals The essence of the page, not the chaos
Layer 3 - AI ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity Ambiguity about who is claiming what A clean signal an agent can attribute and cite

In the 3LA scoring model these layers are weighted 30 / 40 / 30 - Human, Search, AI. Those weights describe the scoring model; they are not measured contributions to traffic or sales. See how the framework scores a page →

Why the jar matters now

In 1999, the glass jar was an art experiment.

In 2026, it is a survival strategy.

If you do not control which signals leave your digital glass jar, search engines and AI models will assemble their own version of you from the noise around you. They will do it whether or not you participate.

3LA is the control surface. It makes what comes out of the jar the same thing you put in - for readers, for search, and for the agents reading on someone else's behalf.
