Citation Gap

The absence of clear attribution markers, fact anchors and authoritative signals in content - the elements AI models require to cite a source, and which are frequently missing from marketing-focused content.

The Citation Gap does not arise because content is wrong - it arises because content is written to persuade, not to be cited. Marketing-focused content is typically filled with unsupported claims, superlatives without documentation and opinions without references. AI models such as ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity prioritise content with clear factual markers («research shows», «according to», «studies document»), external citations, concrete figures and an authoritative tone. Without these signals, the model passes over the content even if it ranks highly on Google and reads well for humans. The Citation Gap is the content-side counterpart to the Hidden Content Paradox: where the Hidden Content Paradox is about technical invisibility, the Citation Gap is about content invisibility. Both result in AI not citing - for different reasons. The solution is to write with what we call Citation-Worthiness as an explicit goal: fact anchors, primary sources and verifiable claims that give AI models sufficient confidence to cite.
